GLAAD Disputes Netflix Claim That ‘Content on Screen Doesn't Directly Translate to Real-World Harm'

In a leaked memo made public Wednesday, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos defended the company's decision to continue streaming Dave Chappelle's latest comedy special despite uproar over its transphobic commentary, saying in part that “content on screen doesn't directly translate to real-world harm.”
And in a statement Wednesday night, LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD disputed that claim, noting that an acclaimed documentary about trans people that Netflix has been streaming since 2020 makes the exact opposite point.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos stood by his defense of Dave Chappelle's latest special in a memo to staff.
Chappelle has received serious criticism for his comments about the trans community in The Closer. He called himself a member of “Team TERF” and defended J.K. Rowling , who was similarly criticized for transphobic commentary.
