GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - While the pandemic has exacerbated preexisting stressors on Michigan educators, a growing shortage of teachers was a problem long before COVID-19 steered lesson plans.
According to data from the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System, retirements between September and December 2020 were up between nearly 43% and 71% compared to the mean from the four previous years.
Last May was the next highest jump at nearly 20% under the same comparison.

Hartford HealthCare, which has held naming sponsorship rights at the Xfinity Theatre in Hartford and the Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford since 2017, has added the soon-to-open, formerly named Harbor Yard Amphitheater to its sponsorships. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - As leaders call for more people to get vaccinated against COVID-19, a Grand Rapids church is trying to help close the racial gap.
State data released for the first time Tuesday broke down the races of those who have already gotten at least one dose. About 42% are white, 4% are Black, 1% are Asian or Pacific Islander and 53% are either unknown or listed as other.
